As you have no doubt heard by now, the Harper government has proposed major cuts to several arts and cultural programs directly affecting the promotion of Canadian arts, and the work of Canadian artists, here and abroad. After having abolished PromArt, the program administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the government then announced it would be cutting the Trade Routes program through the department of Canadian Heritage. According to a study conducted by the Devoir there are at least 12 programs that are implicated, equaling a total of more than 40 million dollars in cuts since the spring. Artists working in interdisciplinary practices are certainly to be among those directly affected by the elimination of these programs.
